Voices in Political Discourse: The Manipulation of Linguistic Resources.

Antonio Reyes-Rodriguez (University of Mississippi)

Program Summary
This paper shows the strategic use of direct quotations as voices (Bakhtin 1981) that Castro and Chavez bring into the here-and-now discourse to support political goals. Politicians construct their ideological positionings with linguistic choices displayed by these voices, creating meaning through relations with other discourses: interdiscursivity (Blackledge 2005, Fairclough 2003).
