Measuring Textual Complexity in Student Writing

Mathias Schulze (University of Waterloo)

Program Summary
We introduce the collective variable 'balanced complexity', which is shown to be a vector in a four-dimensional vector space, which is directly proportional to students' developmental stages. We utilize four robust, textual-surface predictors (mean word length, Carrol's type-token ratio, mean comma unit length, and mean period unit length).
