Residence Hall and Hotel Accommodations

In the past, most workshop participants have chosen to stay at MSU's Owen Graduate Center. All housing arrangements for Owen must be made through the CLEAR office. Other participants may prefer to make their own arrangements and stay at other accommodations near MSU's campus.

Owen Graduate Center (on MSU campus)

This is a student dormitory. Reservations for workshop participants must be made through the CLEAR office (517-432-2286) no later than June 29, 2012.

• Daily rate (per person) single occupancy: $35 per night (plus 6% sales tax)
• Check in: 3:00pm, Check out: 11:00am
• Participants will pay Owen Graduate Center directly (not CLEAR).
• Payment by credit card is preferred upon check-in at Owen.
• Please inform Owen Graduate Center of any dietary restrictions or medical needs when checking in
• Lodging rates do not include a meal allowance. A la carte meals are available at the Riverwalk Market Cafe in Owen Graduate Center (open 7:30am-6:30pm during the summer) or at the Gallery at Snyder-Phillips Hall (open 7:00am-10:00pm during summer). Meal prices at the Gallery are: $5.50 for breakfast, $8.75 for lunch, and $8.75 for dinner, plus tax. Meal prices at Owen equate to approximately the same amount as the Gallery. Snyder-Phillips is located a short distance from Owen, on the North side of the river on Bogue Street. Dining facilities are also available in the International Center next to Wells Hall, in the Student Union, and on Grand River Avenue in downtown East Lansing.

 

Basic Facts for Owen Rooms

• Room Size - approximately 11'9 x 8'6, single occupancy; double occupancy is double the size
• Furniture - twin bed, desk, chair, and dresser
• Bathrooms - suites, two rooms connected by a shared bathroom
• Linens - sheets and towels, pillow and blanket are provided
• Air Conditioning - NOT provided (may want to bring a fan if possible)
• Phones - free local calls in rooms (phone line activated, bring your own phone)
• Ethernet Connections - available via the campus system (bring your own cable)
• Wi-fi - available in lobbies, lounges and dining area
• Smoke-Free and Barrier-Free - available upon request
• Onsite Facilities - laundry room, game and TV room, ATM

Other Accommodations

Some hotels offer an MSU rate. When making your reservations, be sure to ask for any MSU applicable discounts. The prices listed above are subject to change depending on weekdays vs. weekends, special events, etc.

CLEAR encourages all workshop participants to make their reservations early due to special events.

On-campus Parking

Parking information for participants who will be driving to MSU and checking in at Owen Hall the day before the CLEAR summer workshop is scheduled to begin

Visitors staying at Owen Hall should use metered (check meterhead for hours of operation) parking spots while you unload and check-in. Then you will need to drive your car to parking lot #91. Parking lot #91 is located on the corner of Hagadorn Road and Service Road. This is a free parking lot during the summer; no parking permit is required. It is about a 15-minute walk back to Owen. There is also a bus that goes by there every day except Sunday. The route number is #23, and the cost is $1.25. You will need to get off at the CATA Transportation Center on Shaw Lane. Owen Hall is just a short walk from the bus stop. Bus schedules can be found at: http://www.cata.org or by calling 517-394-1000.

Parking near Owen is limited to special circumstances (i.e. handicapped parking). There are handicapped spaces located near Owen; however, they may already be in use when you arrive. Contact CLEAR before arriving on campus if you feel you have a special circumstance.

Parking information for participants who will be driving daily to MSU for the CLEAR summer workshop

The closest visitor parking lot to the Urban Planning Landscape Architecture (UPLA) Building is the Visitor and Commuter Parking lot #79. The entrance to lot #79 is off of Shaw Lane. Park in the east section of the lot, then walk across Shaw Lane to the UPLA Building on the northwest corner of Red Cedar Road and Wilson Road. The daily charge for parking here is $.80 cents per half hour or portion thereof, or you can buy a conference parking permit directly from the MSU Parking Office for $10.25/two days-week or $38.50/month for July. You must park in lots #62W, #79, Ramp #5 or Ramp #6 (within either ramp park in employee spaces only – no meters, no lease spaces, no University vehicles spaces, no disabled spaces) with this permit. You can also buy a daily visitor parking permit for $6/day. With a visitor parking permit, you can park in ungated employee lots/spaces where it states "reserved for employee parking only" or in visitor lots 62W or 79 but not in leased spaces, University vehicle spaces, nor in metered parking. Please let the parking office know you are here for a conference for CLEAR when buying your permit. The Parking Office is located at 87 Red Cedar Road, just west of the Communication Arts and Sciences building. You can call 517-355-8440 to get automated voice directions to their building. The MSU Parking Office is open from 7:30 AM to 4:45 PM, Monday-Friday (except University holidays or if otherwise posted).
There are also several free parking lots this summer on campus. They are lots #75, #83, #89 and #91. Lot #75 is the second lot West of the Breslin Center off of Kalamazoo Street. It is about a 20-25 minute walk to the UPLA Building or to the Old Horticulture Building.

Parking information to participants who will be driving to MSU on the day of the workshop and checking in at Owen Graduate Center later.
